Christmas wreath making
Layer evergreen stems, berry accents and pinecones onto a grapevine base, then add a generous bow and a place to hang it.
Activity steps
- Prepare a wreath place for everyone,Cover the tables and lay out one approximately 12-inch grapevine base, six short evergreen stems, three pinecones, three small artificial berry stems and two meters of unwired ribbon per guest. Allow about three meters of flexible florist wire per wreath. Share suitable adult ribbon scissors and wire cutters between pairs. Check the bases for sharp pieces and confirm that the cutters can handle the selected wire and stems.
- Find the shape before fixing it,Lay the greenery around the base with the stems pointing in one direction, overlapping each stem end with the next piece. Try a full wreath or leave part of the grapevine showing. Place the cones and berry stems until the arrangement feels balanced, leaving room for the bow.
- Secure the greenery and details,Cut manageable lengths of florist wire using compatible cutters. Wrap each greenery stem firmly onto the base, then wire the pinecones between their scales and attach the berry stems. Twist wire ends together and turn them inward so no sharp end sticks out. Tie the ribbon into a bow, attach it with wire, and trim the ribbon tails with scissors. Only adults or confident supervised teens handle the cutters.
- Check, hang and carry it home,Lift the wreath gently and check that every piece is secure. Choose an existing hook or hanger suitable for the finished weight and the intended surface; do not assume every adhesive hook suits every door. Place each wreath in a roomy bag or box without crushing the greenery. Keep artificial foliage and ribbon away from heat or flames, and store the wreath for another year.
