Activity steps

  1. Prepare the jars

    Wash and dry stable wide-mouth jars. Cover the table and give each guest two small ferns or fittonia. Avoid mixing succulents with moisture-loving plants.

  2. Make room for roots

    Add a thin gravel layer and enough potting mix to cover the roots. Make two hollows, loosen the root balls gently and plant at their original depth. Leave breathing room between plants.

  3. Finish lightly

    Add a little gravel around the plants, keeping it off their stems. Mist just enough to settle the mix; jars without drainage should never hold standing water. Wipe the glass.

  4. Write a care card

    Place the jar upright in a box. Keep it in bright indirect light, open to the air, and check soil moisture before adding small amounts of water. Keep plants out of reach of pets or children who might taste them.

Host tip: Jar and plant sizes change soil needs. Test one jar first and adjust the mix allowance to your chosen vessels.

Choose materials suitable for everyone’s age. Supervise children with scissors, needles and small parts. Keep craft supplies separate from food.
