For: Ages 8+ with adult help, teens & adults

Activity steps

  1. Start with dry pots

Clean pots in advance and let them dry thoroughly. Cover the table and sketch a simple pattern on the outside. Keep drainage holes, interiors and the saucer’s wet contact area clear.

  2. Paint thin layers

Apply a thin acrylic base coat to the outside. Let it become touch-dry before adding stripes, spots or a second colour. Share paint and palettes while keeping each person’s brushes separate.

  3. Add the details

Use a smaller brush for outlines or a name. Remove masking tape carefully while following the paint label, and check that no paint blocks drainage.

  4. Cure before using

Leave pots upright to dry and follow the paint maker’s full curing time before handling or adding a nursery pot. Use indoors unless the paint is specifically rated for outdoors. Pack only dry pots with tissue or a cloth cushion.

Host tip: Treat the finished pot as a decorative outer cover and use a removable nursery pot for easier watering.

Choose materials suitable for everyone’s age. Supervise children with scissors, needles and small parts. Keep craft supplies separate from food.
