Activity steps

  1. Practise crisp folds

    Use two sheets to practise matching corners and pressing a crease. Fold a square diagonally into a triangle, open it and repeat the other diagonal. Work slowly and flatten every step.

  2. Fold a simple dog face

    Fold a fresh square diagonally. With the long folded edge at the top, fold both top corners down for ears. Fold the lower tip upward for the chin, turn over and draw a face. Try a second animal by changing the ear angles.

  3. Make a small box

    Fold a square in half each way and open it. Fold all four corners to the centre. Fold opposite edges to the centre and unfold. Open two opposite triangular flaps, lift the remaining sides, then fold the open ends up and over to form the end walls. Demonstrate one end slowly.

  4. Add a lid

    Repeat the box with a slightly larger square, or fold its sides a little less tightly. Check the fit, place the paper animals inside and tie on a tag. Save extra sheets for practice.

Host tip: Make a sample box first and demonstrate each fold where everyone can see. Avoid rushing to complex models.
