Activity steps

  1. Prepare the repair

    Bring clean denim with a small hole away from a stressed seam. Trim only loose threads. Use a prewashed cotton scrap or cut a patch from an 8-inch square, extending at least 2 cm beyond the damage on every side and place it behind the hole.

  2. Pin and mark

    Pin the patch through one garment layer. Mark evenly spaced stitch lines across the patch with a removable pen. Use a thimble and a needle that can pass through the fabric without forcing it.

  3. Stitch the patch

    Work running stitches across the patch and surrounding sound fabric, leaving relaxed, even tension. Keep your other hand out of the needle’s path and avoid sewing the garment shut.

  4. Secure and inspect

    Weave or knot thread ends securely inside. Remove every pin, check the patch from both sides and remove markings as directed. Flex the fabric gently to check that the repair moves comfortably.

Host tip: Large tears, crotch seams and structural repairs may need a sewing machine or an experienced mender.
