Activity steps

  1. Anchor the cords

    Cut eight 2-metre lengths per hanger, reserving the rest for finishing. Fold cords over the ring to make sixteen hanging strands. Secure the ring to a clamped hook at a comfortable working height.

  2. Practise square knots

    Work in groups of four strands. Cross the left outer strand over the centre pair, pass the right strand over it and behind the pair, then through the left loop. Tighten. Repeat in reverse to complete one square knot.

  3. Shape the basket

    Make equal knot rows in the four groups. Lower down, join two strands from neighbouring groups with square knots. Put the empty pot inside to check spacing, then knot all strands securely below its base.

  4. Check the hanger

    Remove the pot and test every knot with a gentle pull. Trim the tassel evenly. Hang only from a suitable installed hook within all component load limits; start with the empty lightweight pot.

Host tip: Expect beginners to need knot demonstrations. Do not hang a heavy ceramic pot or place it above a seat.
