Activity steps

  1. Stretch and draw

Place cotton in the hoop and tighten it like a small drum. Draw a simple flower or initial with a removable fabric pen. Keep the design well inside the hoop edge.

  2. Start with running stitch

Separate two or three floss strands, thread the needle and knot the end. Make evenly spaced in-and-out stitches along a practice line. Keep the thread relaxed enough that the fabric stays flat.

  3. Outline with backstitch

Bring the needle up ahead of the previous stitch, then go back into its end. Repeat for a continuous outline. Change colours for small accents and secure thread ends on the back.

  4. Finish the frame

Remove pen marks as directed, let the cloth dry, then retighten it. Trim excess cloth with enough margin to gather behind the hoop. Count every needle before packing.

Host tip: A small outline can be finished in one session; dense filling stitches are better saved for later.

Choose materials suitable for everyone’s age. Supervise children with scissors, needles and small parts. Keep craft supplies separate from food.
