For: Ages 12+ with adult help & adults

Activity steps

  1. Start a chain

Make a slip knot on the hook. Yarn over and pull through to form a chain; repeat to make 16 loose chains. Use the hook size on the yarn label if it differs from 5 mm.

  2. Make the first row

Insert the hook into the second chain from the hook, yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over again and pull through both loops. Repeat across for 15 single-crochet stitches.

  3. Build a square

Chain one and turn. Work one single crochet into each of the 15 stitches, marking the first and last. Count each row and stop when the fabric is roughly square. It is fine to finish later.

  4. Finish the ends

Cut a 15 cm tail, pull it through the last loop and weave it into several back stitches with a blunt yarn needle. Weave in the starting tail, flatten the coaster and pack any remaining yarn.

Host tip: Keep the first project plain. Pair complete beginners with someone who can show hand position slowly.

Choose materials suitable for everyone’s age. Supervise children with scissors, needles and small parts. Keep craft supplies separate from food.
