Board and card games
Bring out familiar board and card games, play two short rounds, and let everyone switch tables or stay with a favorite.
Activity steps
- Choose games you already know,Hang the prestrung birthday garlands behind the game tables with tested removable tape, keeping loose cords clear of players. Set out one complete game for each group of about four, checking the actual player range and all pieces in advance. Choose familiar games that can finish in fifteen to twenty minutes or agree on a friendly stopping point. Use the tables and seats already available; leave room for drinks away from game pieces.
- Explain one game at each table,Give each person a paper sheet and pencil for scores or rule reminders. A volunteer explains their game and plays a practice turn before scoring starts. Offer a cooperative option or a partner to anyone who is unfamiliar with the rules.
- Play, then change the mix,Play a short round and use the host’s phone timer only as a reminder to check progress. After about twenty minutes, invite guests to switch games or keep playing. Keep money, drinking rules and forfeits out of the games, and agree on any house rules before the next round.
- Bring everyone back together,Finish at a sensible stopping point, return all pieces to their boxes, and invite each table to share one funny or surprising moment. Give credit for teaching, teamwork and trying something new. Move into the group quiz while the tables are clear.
A well-loved game from home is the point. Choose a mix that suits the actual group and do not buy specialist retro consoles or games that nobody knows how to teach.
