Paint watercolor postcards

Paint two watercolor postcards, title a favorite, and share a quiet gallery before the cake arrives.

Adults painting small watercolor postcards with paint pans, brushes and rinse cups.

Activity steps

  1. Set up a little studio,Hang the prestrung birthday garlands above the gallery or cake table with tested removable tape, clear of wet paintings and food. Cover one work area for each group of six and leave a clear drying area. Give each guest two watercolor postcards. Share one watercolor kit among three: use its six included brushes and removable mixing lid. Share a stable rinse cup of water and a cleanup cloth between two, and pencils between two. Keep drinks and food away from paint water.
  2. Find a birthday color story,Lightly sketch a pattern, a favorite place or an imaginary birthday garden on a postcard. Wet a brush, lift color from the watercolor set, and mix small amounts on the palette. Paint the second card with a different color combination or a little birthday message. Rinse between colors and blot the brush on the cloth when it holds too much water.
  3. Let the art rest,Lay the postcards flat in the covered drying area. Write a title and your name on one blank label card, sharing the markers. Rinse brushes and empty water cups with adult help. Drying time depends on the paper and how much water you use; do not stack wet paintings.
  4. Open the birthday gallery,Arrange the postcards flat with their title cards. Each guest can share one color choice or a detail they like, or simply listen. Give friendly observations without ranking the work. Let every postcard dry fully before stacking it for the trip home; if it is still wet, leave it flat for later collection.

Set out a sample showing a few simple brush marks, without asking anyone to copy it. Keep the paintings flat and leave extra drying time after the 45-minute activity. Use clean home tools where suitable.
