Pasta dinner

Serve tomato pasta, a crisp salad and ready-to-eat bread, then settle in for an unhurried birthday meal. The host handles the cooking.

Adults passing tomato pasta around a supper table with green salad, bread and sparkling water.

Activity steps

  1. Plan the kitchen and lay the table,Lay one yellow runner along each table of six, gathering excess length and leaving room for the shared dishes. Keep hot cookware off the fabric. Check dietary needs and the pasta and sauce labels before shopping. Allow one large pot, colander, pair of heatproof tongs and pair of salad tongs for each six guests, with enough hob and sink space for the cooking batches. Put out a plate, dinner fork, table knife, drinking glass and napkin per person. The adult cooking host sets aside oven mitts, a clean knife and chopping board.
  2. Prepare the salad and bread,For each guest, allow 50 g salad leaves, 75 g cherry tomatoes, 20 ml ready-made dressing and 80 g ready-to-eat bread. Wash produce as its label requires and halve tomatoes with a clean knife and board. Divide salad between two roomy bowls per six guests and keep chilled until serving. Slice the bread onto a tray per six. Dress the salad just before eating or let people add dressing at the table.
  3. Cook and serve the pasta,Allow 100 g dried pasta, 125 g ready-made vegetarian tomato sauce and 15 g grated hard cheese or a suitable alternative per person. Cook the pasta in unsalted tap water, following the packet’s cooking time and water quantity, using pots with enough room. The adult host drains it safely in the colander, returns it to the pot, and combines it with the sauce, following the sauce label’s heating directions. Use heatproof tongs to toss and serve. Put cheese in a small separate bowl per six with a teaspoon so guests can choose.
  4. Sit down for the birthday meal,Serve pasta, salad and bread together, with 250 ml sparkling water per person. Keep the meal relaxed and offer a warm birthday toast with the drink already poured. Use the after-supper quiz only when everyone has finished eating; follow food labels for storage and handling.

This is a meat-free pasta supper, salad, bread and sparkling water. It does not include cake, alcohol or cooking equipment purchases. For a large group, check pot capacity, hob space and safe serving in advance rather than assuming one pan can feed everyone.
